Curtains Part 1: Hello Ceiling

So spring is officially here - but where is the nice weather? We're still waiting! Anyway, I had a conversation the other day about curtains that someone had just hung in their freshly painted brand new house. They were concerned that the panels they bought were too short, but thought maybe they could still get away with them. My response was that yes they were not only too short, but they should have been hung higher! By hanging curtains high and wide it maximizes the amount of natural light that comes in and makes the room seem much bigger, as shown in the illustrations below.

Here are some photos that illustrate the same idea.

We love the functionality of layering sheers underneath your panels.

Minding the gap? Think outside the window frame.

You may now be convinced that curtains to the ceiling can only look great with tall windows, but think again! We like to add a sheer roman shade or other type of blind behind the panels to bridge that gap between a shorter window and the ceiling. Especially if the wall color and window treatments are high contrast there appears to be a larger segmented gap that is visually jarring. By bringing the shade up to the same level as the curtain panels it not only adds an extra layer of privacy and sun screening as needed, but it softens the look while keeping the window wide open!

What a huge difference!

So if you were unsure about curtain height before, are you convinced now? Check back next week for some easy ideas to lengthen the curtains you already have to help achieve this same look.
